Maestro Classics: The Tortoise and The Hare (A Review)
The opportunity to review 'The Tortoise and the Hare' by Maestro Classics came at a great time for our family. A friend and I were in the middle of teaching 'Introduction to the Symphony', a homeschool class for 4-6 year olds and many of the concepts we discussed are covered in this classic story. Another neat thing about this story is I always use the example of the tortoise when explaining to my students the need to practice slow and steady versus fast with lots of mistakes!
1. The Tortoise and the Hare by the Maestro himself, Stephen Simon, and narrated by Yadu, a.k.a r. Konrad Czynski
2. About the Story by Bonnie Ward Simon

Mathletics (A Review)
Mathletics is a web-based learning program that integrates home and school learning via the internet. As one of the world’s most used educational websites, it is an online learning resource helping students to enjoy math and achieve outstanding results.
As a member of the TOS crew, I received a free 45 day membership to this site to use and share my review comments with you.
The Mathletics curriculum will help to teach your child/student from grades K-8. It is a safe online community where no interaction exists between participating students! Mathletics allows your child to improve their math skills through live 60 second math challenges against other students from around the world as well as self paced math curriculum activities.
For the most part our family does not use the computer a lot so for my son Redd, Mathletics is an important reward for working hard on his schoolwork. To him, it is a game and in my mind a great review tool.
Mathletics strongly supports homeschooling with 24/hr a day access, lots of printable progress certificates with a self-paced approach that features instant feedback to the student and parent.
Mathletics is offered as an annual subscription for $59 and has a 10 day money back guarantee.
There are several aspects about this site that I really appreciated. It is easy on the eye, simple to navigate, introduces healthy competition, and safe because it does not allow communication between participants!
For a student that does not like or do well with worksheets, this program presents a fun alternative that will keep up a child's interest in the world of math.

All About Spelling (A Review)
Anybody that knows me at all knows that I am 'All About Spelling'! I loved this subject in school and am excited that Redd, my 6 yr. old is turning out to be the same way. I received this product from All About Learning Press free of charge to review and share my thoughts with you.
All About Spelling is unique in that it teaches all the sounds of each letter right from the start. For example, the letter 'a' is typically learned first as a short vowel but with this curriculum the child learns the 3 sounds for 'a' right away. (short a, long a, and ah).
Here are many reasons why All About Spelling works with beginners as well as being a powerful tool for remedial instruction.
All About Spelling is multisensory.
The lessons involve sight, sound, and touch.
All About Spelling is logical.
Spelling concepts are taught in a logical, understandable order. Each lesson builds upon the previous lesson. The sequence has been carefully tested to produce long-term results.
No gaps.
If there is a reliable rule that will help your child out, they teach it. If there is a tip that will help your child master a certain spelling pattern, it’s in there presented in a very logical order.
The program is mastery-based, not grade-level based.
When students master a specific concept, they move on. If a child needs more practice in a certain area, it is allowed.
All About Spelling has continual review.
As the child learns new material, he or she also constantly reviews previously-taught concepts. The program is clear.
Children are taught what they need to know in a direct manner and do not have to guess or come to their own conclusions about the English language.
Each section includes excellent tips for introducing a new concept. One I loved was to introduce dictation (fancy word for spelling test) by using letter tiles that can be ordered separately. Then as the student becomes comfortable spelling on their own this way, dictation moves on to pencil and paper.
I personally received the following to use and review:
Starter Kit (Letter tiles, magnets, Phonogram CD-ROM)
This kit is used in Levels 1-6. If items are purchased separately, $31.85
Level 1 (includes Teacher's Manual and One Student Material Packet) $29.95
Concepts taught will include the following:
How to say and write the first 32 phonograms
How to segment words into their individual sounds
Short and long vowel sounds
How to identify and count syllables in a word
How to choose between c and k at the beginning of a word
When to double f, l, and s
How to spell /k/ at the end of a word
How to form plural words by adding s or es
Compound words
Open and closed syllable types
Flashcards provide a visual and hands-on way to help your student learn and review phonograms, words, and spelling rules.
The Spelling Review Box helps you organize the flashcards so you can quickly see which words, phonograms, and spelling rules your student still needs to learn and review. (Flashcards and dividers are included; you supply the 3x5" index card box.)
The Segmenting Words activity helps your student identify the individual sounds in a word so that he can spell more easily and accurately.
Concept-oriented spelling lists that are grouped by similar phonograms and spelling rules.
Key Cards clearly present key ideas, concepts, and spelling rules that help your student thoroughly understand why a word is spelled the way it is and how to apply that knowledge to many other words.
The More Words and Dictate Phrases sections reinforce current and previously learned concepts, increase the student’s repertoire of words, and allow the student to apply his knowledge in practical situations.
The Progress Chart gives your student a visual reminder of how far he has come and motivates him to master the next step.
Level 2 (Includes Teachers Manuel and 1 Student Material Packet) $39.95
In a practical, hands-on way, your student will learn:
The open and closed syllable types
How to divide words into syllables
How to spell multisyllable words
When y can say /î/
How Silent E can make a vowel long
The vowel-consonant-e syllable type
Two spellings for the sound of /z/
The two sounds of long u
The difference between hard and soft c and g
Ways to spell long e
That English words don’t end in i, j, u, or v
The most common way to spell the sound of /er/
When to use oi/oy, aw/au, and ow/ou and more!
You can also sign up on the website to receive "20 Best Tips For Teaching Spellng" and a weekly email featuring free spelling tips!
I look forward to using this resource with all of my children on our homeschooling journey!

Amazing Bible World History Timeline (A Review)
The way most history is studied and the way the Bible is read today doesn't really give most students a clear picture of how events overlapped and related to each other. This timeline clears up a lot of confusion and shows how world events were/are connected to what God shares with us in His Word.
The Amazing Bible Timeline will show you the order and the timing of people and events, the overlapping of lives (Noah lived until after Abraham was born meaning Abraham and Isaac could have heard about the flood from actual witnesses!), world historical events and where they fit into Biblical times, and seeing God's hand extended to all of mankind throughout history.
My oldest who is 10 will definitely benefit from comparing this chart to what she is learning at school. My other 3 (6 and under) right now just think it is a cool big picture but I see it as being a valuable tool to educate myself so that I can give them a better overall picture of man's history and relationship with God.
Order today to take advantage of their low price of $29.97 and free shipping until Dec 31,2009!
- Printed on sturdy, durable card stock! (heavier than poster or other paper)
- Scuff coat varnish gives you years of wear and value.
- Rolled for shipping
- Sent USPS Priority mail with tracking included for fast delivery
**Christmas special **- $24.97 per Timeline with an order of TWO or more timelines
Includes:
1. Free USPS priority mail shipping any where in the USA - including PO Boxes and APOs. (International customers get a $6.00 discount for USPS Priority Mail International Shipping.)
2. Free gift wrapping including to/from gift stickers on the gift wrapped package inside as well as on the outside shipping box (be sure to check the "Please Gift Wrap" box on the order page)
3. Two gifts in one! A card with directions to download "Interactive Maps of the Holy Land" included with each Timeline.
4. Additional Suprise bonuses over the next month (Genealogy of Jesus Christ e-posters and more! )
You may call toll free 877-966.7300 for further questions or offline ordering.
The more we can understand the lives of these ancient people and the world events surrounding them helps us to connect with the principles God lays out for us so lovingly in His Word!

AVKO (A Review)
AVKO is another gem to add to your treasure chest of teaching resources! I was given a membership to this site in exchange for an honest review of the material offered with a membership.
Here are the many benefits of purchasing an AVKO Basic Membership for the cost of $25/year.
--Discounts on AVKO printed materials such as curriculum for reading, writing, spelling, handwriting and typing
--Hundreds of dollars worth of the following FREE e-books
The Patterns of English Spelling (All 10 Volumes)
Word Families in Sentence Context
To Teach a Dyslexic
Starting at Square One
The Teaching of Reading & Spelling: a Continuum from Kindergarten through College.
The Reading Teacher's List of Over 5,500 Basic Spelling Words
--Access to the Member Only section which includes misc. readings for comprehension and supplemental curriculum.
--AVKO Newsletter with freebies, discounts, resources, and promotions
--Access to Don McCabe's most popular workshop recordings in MP3 format.
--Supplemental Curriculum Materials including word games, worksheets, activities, and more!
(Flashcards, SAT help and Biblical proverbs in different translations also available here!)
--Access to Pretests and Placement Tests
--Access to the Answer Keys for the Unscramblers and Family Reunion exercises of the Engaging Language Kits
For myself, I plan on mostly using the list of 5500 basic spelling words, the misc. readings for comprehension and am reading through The Teaching of Reading & Spelling (this book is giving me insight to the frustration a dyslexic must have as well as showing me what I know and do not know about teaching reading). I also look forward to doing the word games with my kids. We love 'gameschool' here at my house!
One aspect of this site I haven't fully investigated yet but am definitely interested in is the Keyboarding Instruction for young learners. Computers are used so much in the schools and yet students are not taught how to type correctly till almost middle school. I really haven't put my kids on the computer much yet because I did not want to have to reteach them how to type. With AVKO, it looks like I now have an inexpensive way to begin teaching this important skill!
As a parent or teacher, the site helps to discover the different ways children learn. A multi sensory approach is used in many of these resources. I believe anybody that has a reading problem or is working with someone who does would greatly benefit looking into the wealth of resources offered by AVKO.
Go check out the freebies section and get acquainted with this awesome resource!
As a member of the TOS Homeschool Crew, I was given this product to review. I was not paid for this post and do not have to return the product to the vendor. The opinions expressed in this post are those of the blog owner (me).

Guardian Angel Pulblishing (2 e-books and a review)
I received the following 2 e-books, free of charge from Guardian Angel Publishing to read and review: Andy and Spirit Go To The Fair, and Hamster-Holidays.
Andy & Spirit Go to the Fair is a sweet, charming storybook that is part of a series of books which take us into the lives of a handicapped boy Andy and his horse Spirit. Andy is part of a
4-H club who this time has gone to the fair to participate in a horsemanship competition.
The pair become an inspiration to each other as they face the challenge together of being different than others as they compete in the ring.
To a creative homeschooling mom this book introduces many subjects: being handicapped or having a special need, horses, 4-H clubs, performing in front of a crowd and of course that excitement children experience when attending their local county fair. This book by Mary Jean Kelso, provides some excellent links to several of these topics and includes 10 illustrations, 2100 words and 24 pages.
There are several ways of purchasing this delightful book here:
PDF eBook DOWNLOAD $5.00
eBook CD $9.95+$5.95 S&H
PRINT Book $10.95+$6.95 S&H
DVD Book Video COMING SOON! $9.95 + $5.95 S&H
This book, Hamster Holidays, is a treasure you should definitely check out. If you have started on the grammar road of nouns and adjectives and need a fun way to review or maybe want to introduce the two in a way that immediately engages your child's interest, then go get this book!
Through a series of cute poems that journey through the months of the year nouns are in blue and adjectives are in red.
Several supplemental pages at the end include scrambled words, match-up and crossword puzzles—plus much more.
I recently introduced my son Redd to both of these concepts and look forward to using
Hamster Holidays in further teaching!
This book may be purchased in several ways here:
PDF eBook DOWNLOAD $5.00
eBook CD $9.95 + $5.95 S&H
PRINT Book $10.95 + $6.95 S&H
Guardian Angel Publishing has a delightful site that includes FREEBIES,
an i kids play app that can be loaded on your ipod or iphone for those office waiting times,
Littlest Angel books (e-picture books that feature your child's name),
and a nice list of faith-based books.

4 Envelopes of Coupons To Give Away 11-2-09
abc teach website (a review)
I discovered abcteach probably at least a year ago and have used their free section from time to time but the full membersip was totally worth taking a look at.
Are you on a budget, need supplemental worksheets, or need to create your own worksheets to help your child study for a test? Then abcteach has what you need. My daughter recently entered the fifth grade and the amount of information she needed to know for tests drastically increased. So, what we do on the weekends is use abctools to create crossword puzzles, word searches, and extra math worksheets for her to use doing the week as a fun way to have consistent studying.
My son loves math and even though he is a first-grader he is already multiplying, dividing and starting to learn fractions. He speeds through worksheets and abcteach has helped me keep him supplied with plenty of extra drill sheets, dot-to-dots that reinforce counting by 2's, 3's, etc. and worksheets that help fill in the gap with extra math skills such as time and money.
I am also using the site to help with a homeschool music class that a friend and I are teaching. The site provides us with plenty of music coloring pages and more!
The teaching extras section features templates for flashcards, badges, calendars and more (too many to list here!).
For non-members there are thousands of worksheets available, for members there are over 35,000! You will find materials on every subject from pre-k to high school level.
ABC teach is a great tool for parents, educators, babysitters, daycare providers, etc. There are several options available in purchasing this product:
* $40 per user per year / $70 two years — individuals/groups 2-9
* $35 per user per year — groups of 10-29
* $25 per user per year — groups of 30 or more. **SUPER SITE LICENSE pricing available for groups of 100 or more. Contact support@abcteach.com for details.
