Summer Nature Study and More
Would you like to enjoy a nature walk or nature study, but you worry about covering those formal areas of science in biology, physics, and chemistry?

This nature study allows you to enjoy nature and time with your child outdoors. At the same time you will help guide him and make connections between his natural world around him and more formal scientific concepts.

The Summer Nature Study and More has topics for June, July and August. Each month has several topics pertinent to the season. For each topic, you receive living book reading suggestions, questions to promote discussion of the topic during your nature walk, suggested nature walk or post-walk activities, and scientific connection topics.

The scientific connection topics extend your nature study observations into a study of scientific concepts in biology, physical science, or chemistry. You receive a list of suggested living books and a list of experiments and activities related to the extended topic.

For example, a nature study of bird and animal migration extends into a study of the earth's magnetic fields and magnetism.

Also included throughout the book is poetry relevant to each topic in the nature study to use as copywork or literature study.

At the back of the book is a section offering recommendations in nature journaling and sketching . There are also nature journal notebooking pages to use during your nature study to write your observations or copywork and make sketches of your topics of study.

This nature study method helps you and your child bridge the information you gather from your personal experiences and observations with formal scientific concepts. So, get ready to ditch those science textbooks, delve into your natural living world and guide your child into experiencing science the natural and personal way!

Encouragement for the middle of the week!

I was sent this email today and wanted to share it! Enjoy!

The song that silenced the cappuccino machine

Good to be reminded of....

Have you heard the story about...
The song that silenced the cappuccino machine?

It was chilly in Manhattan but warm inside the Starbucks
shop on 51st Street and Broadway, just a skip up from Times Square .
Early November weather in New York City holds only the slightest hint of
the bitter chill of late December and January, but it's enough to send
the masses crowding indoors to vie for available space and warmth.

For a musician, it's the most lucrative Starbucks location
in the world, I'm told, and consequently, the tips can be substantial if
you play your tunes right. Apparently, we were striking all the right
chords that night, because our basket was almost overflowing.

It was a fun, low-pressure gig - I was playing keyboard
and singing backup for my friend who also added rhythm with an arsenal
of percussion instruments. We mostly did pop songs from the '40s to the
'90s with a few original tunes thrown in. During our emotional rendition
of the classic, "If You Don't Know Me by Now," I noticed a lady sitting
in one of the lounge chairs across from me. She was swaying to the beat
and singing along.

After the tune was over, she approached me. "I apologize
for singing along on that song. Did it bother you?" she asked.

"No," I replied. "We love it when the audience joins in.
Would you like to sing up front on the next selection?"

To my delight, she accepted my invitation. "You choose," I
said. "What are you in the mood to sing?"

"Well. ... do you know any hymns?"

Hymns? This woman didn't know who she was dealing with. I
cut my teeth on hymns. Before I was even born, I was going to church. I
gave our guest singer a knowing look. "Name one."

"Oh, I don't know. There are so many good ones. You pick

"Okay," I replied. "How about 'His Eye is on the

My new friend was silent, her eyes averted. Then she fixed
her eyes on mine again and said, "Yeah. Let's do that one."

She slowly nodded her head, put down her purse,
straightened her jacket and faced the center of the shop. With my
two-bar setup, she began to sing.

Why should I be discouraged?
Why should the shadows come?

The audience of coffee drinkers was transfixed. Even the
gurgling noises of the cappuccino machine ceased as the employees
stopped what they were doing to listen. The song rose to its conclusion.

I sing because I'm happy;
I sing because I'm free.
For His eye is on the sparrow
And I know He watches me.

When the last note was sung, the applause crescendoed to a
deafening roar that would have rivaled a sold-out crowd at Carnegie
Hall. Embarrassed, the woman tried to shout over the din, "Oh, y'all go
back to your coffee! I didn't come in here to do a concert! I just came
in here to get somethin' to drink, just like you!" But the ovation
continued. I embraced my new friend. "You, my dear, have made my whole
year! That was beautiful!"

"Well, it's funny that you picked that particular hymn,"
she said.

"Why is that?"

"Well . .." she hesitated again, "that was my daughter's
favorite song."

"Really!" I exclaimed.

"Yes," she said, and then grabbed my hands. By this time,
the applause had subsided and it was business as usual. "She was 16. She
died of a brain tumor last week."

I said the first thing that found its way through my
stunned silence. "Are you going to be okay?"

She smiled through tear-filled eyes and squeezed my hands.
"I'm gonna be okay. I've just got to keep trusting the Lord and singing
his songs, and everything's gonna be just fine." She picked up her bag,
gave me her card, and then she was gone.

Was it just a coincidence that we happened to be singing
in that particular coffee shop on that particular November night?
Coincidence that this wonderful lady just happened to walk into that
particular shop? Coincidence that of all the hymns to choose from, I
just happened to pick the very hymn that was the favorite of her
daughter, who had died just the week before? I refuse to believe it.

God has been arranging encounters in human history since
the beginning of time, and it's no stretch for me to imagine that he
could reach into a coffee shop in midtown Manhattan and turn an ordinary
gig into a revival. It was a great reminder that if we keep trusting him
and singing his songs, everything's gonna be okay.

The next time you feel like GOD can't use YOU, just

b.. Abraham was too old
c.. Isaac was a daydreamer

Sarah's Wish (a novel review)

Are you looking for a way to teach 19th century history to your children that breathes life into names, dates, and important historical events? Look no farther!

I recently received a free copy of Jim Baumgardner's book, 'Sarah's Wish' to read and review.
I remember having a hard time going to sleep one night and figured I would start the book and hopefully fall asleep soon thereafter. Well, sleep didn't come because I couldn't put the book down! The book began with a girl Sarah having the burden of a secret to bear and at first I thought, Oh no, another book I have to censor while reading to the kids. However, reading on calmed my fears! I don't want to give away the story but her 'secret' was legitimate and the book even covers how a Christian can creatively tell the truth while protecting others from harm!

'Sarah's Wish' takes the readers mind into the world of runaways and slave catchers, the underground railroad, gypsies, riverboats, and very entertaining characters along the way.

I appreciate the author's attempt to create a character who was in the process of learning so many great character qualities such as: respect, manners, willingness to work hard, risking one's life to help the helpless, and especially what I mentioned before about telling the truth creatively if necessary. The author is committed to writing books that are free of any objectionable material!

Textbooks have their place, but I have found in my own reading that more information is retained when learned by reading lots of biographies, autobiographies and historical fiction. The author has taken much time to make this book a valuable resource in the hands of a parent wanting to give more than a textbook history lesson. Take a few minutes and check into the following available free resources:
1. Sarah's Wish comes with a free audio book download. (Go here for sample)
2. Entertaining and educational newsletter that includes recipes, contests, vocabulary, fun history facts and quotes, questions/answers by readers, and more!
(send an email to to receive this e-newsletter for free)
3. Links to sites pertaining to people, places and events mentioned in the book.
4. Homeschoolers who have read and used this book.

Jim Baumgardner, the author, personally autographs every book he sends out! He is now offering Sarah's Wish for the price of $9.99 and does not charge shipping and handling! Part of the proceeds from his books goes to care for girls at Carpenter’s Place.

There are now two more books in the series, 'Sarah's Promise', and 'Sarah's Escape' available for purchase. I am getting ready to order mine and hope you will join me in a great reading experience!

Nature Friend Magazine (A Review)

Have you been looking for a good nature magazine that invites your children to explore nature while supporting a biblical worldview? Look no farther! Over the last few months, I've received two free issues of Nature Friend Magazine to review with my family. The magazine can be used by any age student and to be honest, it has been the basis of our science studies this school year.

It is so much more than science. I've said before that I love educational products which incorporate different subjects. My August issue featured an hidden picture page, 2 word searches, crossword puzzle, research ideas, a writing lesson, match the word to definition, an acrostic puzzle, a 'You Can Draw' page, photography lesson and more!!! I counted the activities that could be done daily and there were at least 23! So one issue could supply a month's worth of science studies, depending on the age of the child.

There are many ways readers can contribute to Nature Friend and have their work published! I've done this before with Highlights magazine and my daughter loved seeing her work in an 'official magazine'.
Here is a list of the contributions a reader can send:
Nature-related poems and artwork for a "Pictures and Poems" section
Photographs for "Creation Close-ups"
Submit stories and photos for the section "Nature Trails"
Each month has an art lesson called “You Can Draw.” Besides the new lesson, a selection of children’s drawings from a previous lesson is always included.

Nature Friend magazine is in its 27th year and Kevin and Bethany Shank have owned
Nature Friend since May 2006. It is a monthly magazine with loads of extra features.
One of the issues, called
'Readers Issue' is a compilation of readers submissions.

This year they also featured a study guide which can be purchased separately but is included as an insert in the magazine.
The Study Guide reinforces the subject matter from that particular issue of Nature Friend by using exercises such as these: crossword puzzle, acrostic, fill-in-the-blank, true and false, etc. Exercises may be photocopied for classroom use, or for the various children in the homeschool.
