MathGalaxy.com : A Review

I am really loving my computer and all of these math sites!  It is taking me longer than I thought it would to get back into the groove of things since my daughter Miya was born a few months ago.  Because of this we are doing a lot more schoolwork on the computer than ever before!

MathGalaxy.com was very generous in that they supplied the TOS crew with a download of every product their site offers.  My part of the review will center on three of their products,
Math Galaxy Whole Numbers Fun, The Math Riddler Worksheet Generator-Whole Numbers and Math Galaxy Whole Numbers Riddles E-book.

Math Galaxy Whole Numbers Fun
"Math Galaxy Whole Numbers Fun is a comprehensive math tutorial that covers all of whole number operations plus Time, Money, and the sections of Length, Area, Volume, Pictographs, Bar Graphs and Probability appropriate for grades 1 to 4. It also includes the whole number sections of the Word Jumbles, Riddles, and Bridge the Swamp games and the Labyrinth mazes."
My 6 yr. old, Redd is using Math Galaxy as a reward after he works on a math site that is a little more sequential in their approach. I love it because he can practice problems by himself and he loves the Word Jumbles game. He can do this one without my help so we are sticking with that one for right now!  An added bonus is when they solve the word, a box pops up with the word and its definition! He has to call for me to read it out loud before moving on to the next word.

The Math Riddler Worksheet Generator-Whole Numbers
This worksheet generator is awesome.  It it a combination of riddles and just plain worksheets. There are 'endless'  worksheets available here to help tweak a math skill your student is working on. A neat aspect that I like is  you can click on 'with answers' and you can either let your student check his work at the computer or print it out for him/her to check later.

Math Galaxy Whole Numbers Riddles E-book
You will come out better economically by purchasing the worksheet generator but if you just want a book to print out and hand to your student than this e-book contains 130 of the printable riddles that are in The Whole Numbers Worksheet Generator software plus standard math worksheets for those who would prefer an eBook.

Take time to check out their site. The site offers a generous sampling of what you see here and you may take a guided tour of what the different levels offer.

The TOS Crew received these products as a download but they are offered on the site as a CD-ROM. You need a computer Windows 98 or later or Mac OS X and a CD-ROM drive for installation. The cost of the CD-Roms are $29.95 each and the e-books are $14.95 each.

Seasons of Faith Series from CBH Ministries: A Review

Ecclesiastes 3:1 tells us, “To everything there is a season,
a time for every purpose under heaven.”

My family received this package from CBH ministries on our way out to run errands several weeks ago and by the time we got home this series of books had captured the heart of my boys.  The series consists of four books, each representing a season of our lives.  Each book contains a CD of Uncle Charlie reading the story.

Spring (when someone begins to experience a new life in Christ) is represented by the book Race With Midnight. Becky asks God to help her share her faith in Christ with her cousin Sarah. The words and illustrations take you on horse rides through the hills and valleys of a horse farm in Montanna.

Summer is the season when faith grows under God’s love and care. You Can't Come In features a boy named Zach who does a great job of comparing mud to sin in order to explain salvation to his friend Adam.

Autumn, a time where God teaches us to grow in forgiveness and grace, is represented by the book
Seventy Times Seven.  Will Brad learn to forgive as he has been forgiven? Boys will love this book about baseball and ice cream!

Winter is the season of our lives where God helps us learn how to depend on Him for comfort and love despite severe trials. In Braving The Storm, children will learn along with Thomas how to face changes in our lives. Grandparents will love reading this story to their grandchildren when they come to visit!

Each book ends with a message to the reader about sin, forgiveness and salvation. I enjoyed how each book embraced different cultures in our society which could help to begin conversations with young ones about how God has made each one of us unique. There is also a  page on the web site which supplies you with some questions to discuss with your children as you read.

These softcover books may be purchased separately for $10 each or as a series for $40. Right now CBH Ministries is offerering a special when you buy the book set.  Up until April 15, 2010 you will receive free shipping on the set by using the code FREESHIPAPR15.

I was delighted with these books and their simple gospel message!

Homeschool Library Builder

If you have been a subscriber to my site for any length of time you know how much I love books. My husband picks on me and asks if I am going to find a way to hang them from the ceiling. I tell him, 'Don't tempt me!'
Seriously, if you are a homeschooling mom you probably love books like I do. My goal is to have a serious library in my own home. But we all know, books can be expensive. Homeschool Library Builder might be able to help us with that problem.
Homeschool Library Builder was created by 2 homeschool moms who each have four children, ranging in ages from 10-21 years. They both have a desire to help fellow homeschool parents and offer a user-friendly website geared toward serving homeschoolers and others who use excellent literature to educate. Here is what they offer.
-Books: new and gently used books for all ages at affordable prices, giving others an opportunity to build their own home library. They stock titles used in literature-based curricula (Sonlight, Tapestry of Grace, Ambleside, Five in a Row, Beautiful Feet, and others) as well as those useful for unit studies for all interests and grade levels.
-Book Search: If a customer needs an out-of-stock book or a title not carried, we are happy to search for it.
Product Marketing:  For a small company like HSLB or others who want to launch a newly-created product or service, purchasing ad space in magazines or on the internet oftentimes just isn’t an option. The HSLB Market Place offers the opportunity to get the word out about a “homegrown” product or service through their website as well as their monthly online newsletter. This is a free service offered to  HSLB members.

 - Frequent Buyer Program: When a customer becomes an HSLB member (free of charge, of course!) they offer incentive programs through a book points program. Fifteen book points equals one dollar for use toward future purchases. These points never expire. Points can be earned a number of ways:
1. Purchasing Books (one book point is earned for every dollar spent on books)
2. Referring friends to HSLB (so when you go to sign up please say onceuponaqpon referred you! HINT! HINT!)
3. Linking HSLB’s Website from the Customer’s Website or Blog

I personally always go to a site's clearance section first. Let me just say, Wow! Prices as low as 75 cents.
Plus, remember you earn points for every dollar spent! In fact, I just saw a book I need to purchase for our church's Kids Kamp this year about David and Goliath.

Great Software Tools: A Review

Before I begin this review I will be perfectly honest and say this particular review and the work it entailed came at a tough time.  Out newest addition, Mia, wasn't gaining weight and nursing around the clock as well as keeping up with my 3 boys took every bit of energy I had.  Whatever little brain power I have was just not working for me on this one.
So I am mainly going to inform you of what Great Software Tools has to offer and lead you in the right direction.
Have you ever needed help with posters, scrapbooking, certificates, awards, cards, designing things on paper, blog buttons and banners, kids reports/portfolios? Well, Great Software Tools is there to help you out.
There are really a lot of creations featured on their website that I would love to learn how to do. As this year's reviews are coming to an end, I hope to learn from this program some tips to improve my blog's appearance.

I was very impressed at what a lot of students were able to do with this program. Check out the students section here. I have always wanted to learn how to do a newsletter and that is included in this program as well!

This software can help you take a photo and manipulate it to suit you or your student's current projects.
Take a look here. I think that is pretty cool!

Here is what the creators of Great Software Tools have to say:
"Over the years, our design team members have become specialists in coming up with clean, uncluttered, easy to use, yet powerful graphics editors. We want to open up the world of color and design to computer users untrained in graphic design, giving them the opportunity to add their own customized graphics into their home and work environments."

I like the phrase 'easy to use'!
Go see for yourself.   The price is $149 for a 1 user licence. Try out their 30 day free trial period here!

Chocolate Cheerios Review and Giveaway

Mmmm, Mmmm!  You can imagine the squeals of delight as I let my boys open up this review product from
Cheerios through MyBlogSpark!
I am not ashamed to say that I have used this particular box of cereal as a bribe. It's a win-win situation for everybody. I was reminded of the Bill Cosby video where he talks about giving his kids chocolate cake and they are singing 'Dad is great, he gives us chocolate cake'.  So I sang something similar about myself and the kids got a kick out of that!
The gift pack I received also included a cool chocolate bowl (good candy bowl),  and chocolate bath and body items.
Here are a few recipes you can try out with your family:

Start to Finish: 1 Hour 45 Minutes

Crust
1 cup Gold Medal® all-purpose flour
1 cup Chocolate Cheerios® cereal, crushed
2/3 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 cup butter, softened
1 teaspoon vanilla
3 cups miniature marshmallows
Topping
2/3 cup light corn syrup
1/4 cup butter
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 bag (11.5 ounces) milk chocolate chips
4 cups Chocolate Cheerios® cereal
Candy sprinkles, if desired

Heat oven to 350°F. Line bottom and sides of 13x9-inch pan with foil. In large bowl, mix all crust ingredients except marshmallows with electric mixer on low speed until crumbly. Press firmly into bottom of pan.

Bake 12 to 15 minutes or until light golden brown. Remove from oven. Immediately sprinkle with marshmallows. Return to oven; bake an additional 1 to 2 minutes or until marshmallows just begin to puff. Cool while preparing topping.

In large saucepan, place all topping ingredients except cereal and sprinkles. Heat over medium-low heat just until chips are melted and mixture is smooth, stirring constantly. Remove from heat; stir in 4 cups cereal. Immediately spoon warm topping over marshmallows; spread to cover. Sprinkle with candy sprinkles. Cool completely, at least 1 hour.

Using foil to lift, remove mixture from pan; remove foil. With deep 2 1/2-inch heart-shaped cookie cutter, cut out 18 hearts. Store loosely covered.

Friday School Freebie

Friday, March 5:
Tor, A Street Boy of Jerusalem (PDF ebook)

Tor was a poor boy who lived in Jerusalem at the time of Jesus.
At the hands of Pilate he receives a wound that leaves him blind.
Then one day, Tor hears shouts of 'Hosanna!' and Tor is taken to
the temple where he meets Jesus. After Jesus heals his blindness,
Tor becomes a follower of Christ. When Tor learns that Jesus is
going to be betrayed, he tries frantically to save him.

Most of this excellent book by Florence Morse Kingsley takes place
during the last week of Jesus life. Tor encounters many people
that Scriptures tell us about, including Pilate's wife, Peter, Judas,
etc. This book is by the same author who wrote Titus,
A Comrade of the Cross. This would be a wonderful story to read aloud
during this season leading up to Easter.

Beehive Reader from All About Spelling: A Review

Some of you may remember awhile back I reviewed the product
All About Spelling.  Well, the publisher, All About Learning Press is proud to announce a new series of readers called All About Reading. All About Reading follows the same sequence as All About Spelling, and the first level of the program is due to be released by the end of the year. The program includes decoding skills, fluency, comprehension, vocabulary and lots and lots of reading practice.

I received the first book in this series titled Beehive Reader 1.
The book correlates 100 % with All About Spelling or can be read on it's own.

My son loves it. He see's the books his sister reads and is very proud to tote around his 'chapter book'! The look on his face when he finishes a chapter quickly and successfully is priceless!

The publisher has graciously given us permission to show you a few of the pages. Take a look!

This beautifully illustrated, 160 page hardcover book is priced at $19.95.
Your beginning reader will delight in finding out what happens when…
…a busy cat lives in a windmill
…a sleepy bear cub takes a nap
…a grumpy duck demands a snack
…a singing bat befriends a lonely king
… a curious boy shrinks from tall to small
… and much more!

Math Mammoth: A Review

Maria Miller, the owner of Math Mammoth named her site well!  If you have a student in grades 1-8 then there is something on this site for you. You might just need some worksheets to help your child master a certain concept or a complete curriculum. It's all here.
If you can not pinpoint exactly what worksheets to get Ms. Miller will promptly answer any questions you might have and give you great recommendations.
I personally received from Math Mammoth, the worktext Math Mammoth Clock. Redd and I had worked a little last year on telling time but I needed something that would help him master time telling.
A worktext contains the teaching and the exercises removing the need for a separate teachers manual.
(I appreciated this!). Since Redd is reading pretty well now he can read most of the instructions for himself.
Anytime you can get a child working independantly it is awesome!
Here are the contents of Math Mammoth Clock: (gradually progresses from 1st grade concepts to 3rd grade concepts)
