MathTutorDVD.com Review
"I personally get a thrill out of making seemingly complex topics suddenly easy to students. I have found over the years that the easy way to do this is to learn by working example problems, beginning with the easier ones and gradually progressing to the harder ones."

Not too long ago I received 2 DVD's from MathTutorDVD.com titled The Basic Math Word Problem Tutor, and Young Minds: Numbers and Counting. For several months up until Mia was born we did a lot of our school from workbooks so these videos were a welcome change!
My youngest son, Elijah, normally is not interested in watching anything on the T.V. (I know this is a good thing but sometimes it sure is helpful to pop in a video, like when something is boiling on the stove and the baby is crying, etc all at the same time). Anyway, he likes this video. Rusty had worked a lot lately on saying and writing his numbers so maybe that helped. Young Minds: Numbers and Counting is similar to
Baby Einstein videos we have watched but what I liked about this DVD is when they introduce a number they show it several different times with different scenes like 3 animals, 3 fruits, etc. and each time they don't just say the number but always count up to it from 1. So by the time they reach 10 the children watching/listening have heard a whole lot of counting up from 1. The photos and video shots used are high quality and the music is by Bach, Beethoven, Mozart and others. Go here to view a sample video and screenshots. The price for this product is $19.99.
Your child will learn:
- Learn to recognize the numbers 1-10.
- Associate the number with physical objects.
- Count from 1-10.
- Animal names and sounds.
- Fruits and Vegetables.
- Names of colors.
- Names of machines such as cars, airplanes, etc.
Bonus Features:
- Repeat Play
- Picture Puzzles
- Connect the Dots
- Name the Animal
O.K., now who is afraid of word problems? When I was in school, I could do math all day long except when it came to word problems in the higher grades. The 'problem' is that word problems are the practical side of learning math, right? Well, Jason Gibson, the instructor in this DVD does a great job of patiently breaking down word problems for the following concepts in math:
Disc 1
Section 1: Adding Whole Numbers
Section 2: Subtracting Whole Numbers
Section 3: Multiplying Whole Numbers
Section 4: Dividing Whole Numbers
Section 5: Adding Decimals
Section 6: Subtracting Decimals
Section 7: Multiplying Decimals
Section 8: Dividing Decimals
Disc 2
Section 9: Adding Fractions
Section 10: Subtracting Fractions
Section 11: Multiplying Fractions
Section 12: Dividing Fractions
Section 13: Percents, Part 1
Section 14: Percents, Part 2
Section 15: Ratio and Proportion
This DVD is great for Redd because his reading skills have recently caught up to his math skills so word problems are showing up more frequently in his workbooks. "Truthfully, I wish I were a genius, but I am most certainly not. My opinion on that matter is that there are very very few people who have ever lived who I would consider a real genius. Folks like Beethoven who could compose music while deaf, or Einstein who made incredible leaps of insight in physics - are the true geniuses. Everyone else, like you and me, just need to be introduced to the right instructor early on to break the process down and make the topics understandable. With understanding comes confidence, and confidence is 100% the name of the game in math and science."
